cosmic experiment under watchful puppy eyes

cosmic experiment under watchful puppy eyes

sterile white / beeping machines /

 like mission control monitors /

tracking breaths like spacecraft signals /

here we are: contained within

 four walls of sanitized dreams,

 a pristine prison that orbits

 my need for control

what must it feel like to love

 knowing gravity keeps pulling?

 nurses tell me mortality

 is the cruelest teacher;

that come to think of it

 we're all just borrowed oxygen

 walking / waiting

i think of Laika sometimes,

that brave cosmonaut pup

launched into the void knowing

no return ticket waited;

how they let her play with children

before strapping her in for

her final flight

sunlight streams through windows

like god's judgement, casting

shadows on trembling hands that once

held victories / now hold only

IV lines and fading hopes

my own strength scatters like

space debris - once i danced

across spotlit courts, now

my legs forget basic steps,

muscle memory failing

beneath fluorescent lights

but today is divine intervention

i can sit up, speak clearly,

almost pretend normalcy

when you visit with stories

of places i used to know /

i see us as we were: victorious,

untouchable, infinite in our

delusions of forever

your tears fall like forbidden fruit

onto sterile sheets / each drop

a memory we can't reclaim /

your head against my failing heart

listening for promises i can't keep

we are cosmic experiments /

like that space-bound dog /

strapped in, counting down,

hearts racing toward

inevitable ends

yet loved / oh how loved /

in these final revolutions

around our private sun,

two souls intertwined

in fluorescent paradise

perhaps there's a court

 beyond these constellations /

 where people and puppies float

 weightless and free/

 where time keeps no score

the monitor beeps on/

marking time like Sputnik signals /

 while Laika watches from stars

seeing us / her fellow voyagers /

 washing away in antiseptic light
